Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan has confirmed two deaths connected to its 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, the first fatalities identified by the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 11,234 cases as of Aug. 3. It also recorded 193 hospitalizations through July 30. Medical records showed both people had serious underlying conditions that cyclosporiasis and dehydration may have affected. Officials said they would not release further details about the two individuals.

Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak.

Both people became ill before the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged the Michigan deaths on Aug. 3. The agency described them as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving people with underlying health conditions. Michigan’s total includes all cases reported during the state’s investigation and remains subject to change. Federal surveillance figures generally include laboratory-confirmed cases and can differ from state totals that include probable illnesses.

Federal officials are also investigating a nine-state Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. As of July 24, nine states had reported 1,947 infected people who also reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 people required hospital care in that federal count. Illness onset dates ranged from June 22 through July 20. The CDC later noted Michigan’s two deaths, which had not appeared in the detailed July 24 federal totals.

Recall covers iceberg lettuce from central Mexico

Taylor Farms de Mexico removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall included several food-service products and Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at selected Walmart stores. Listed use-by dates ranged from July 18 through Aug. 3. Taylor Fresh Foods distributed affected food-service lettuce across 27 states between June 29 and July 16. Taco Bell stopped using lettuce from the supplier on July 17.

Michigan officials have not connected every state case to the recalled iceberg lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said lettuce or salad greens remain a potential source. However, the state has not identified one product, grower or supplier for its entire outbreak. Officials said other food items could not be completely excluded from the broader investigation. The federal lettuce-linked outbreak represents only part of the cyclosporiasis activity reported across the country.

    Symptoms can persist without treatment

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite. People can become infected after consuming contaminated food or water. The illness commonly causes frequent watery diarrhea, appetite loss, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Symptoms often begin about one week after exposure, although the timing can vary. Without treatment, the illness may last longer than a month, and symptoms can disappear before returning.

Health officials advise consumers not to eat any recalled iceberg lettuce still in their possession. People should discard the product or return it to the place of purchase. They should also clean containers and surfaces that touched the recalled lettuce. Anyone with symptoms should contact a health care provider, especially after eating iceberg lettuce during the previous two weeks. Michigan continues to update case totals as state and local health departments investigate the outbreak.
